People were really mad about that Ferris Bueller ad

but when you think about it, were they more angry because it “ruined” something “sacred” to them, or because Matthew Broderick, who was extraordinary in 1986, playing an extraordinary character, grew up to seem a little, uh… boring?

Ferris Bueller spontaneously performed “Twist and Shout” in the middle of a parade in Chicago. He hacked his school’s computer to change his number of absences- in 1986! He never took ONE clarinet lesson. The Dean of students at his high school literally dedicated an entire day to tracking him down. He was Abe Froman, the Sausage King of Chicago.

Ferris had no where to go but down. His immortality as a high school senior in 1986 is part of what makes his relationship with Matthew Broderick so special, but it’s also what makes us so sad to see Matthew driving a Honda CR-V, looking just like everyone else.

  1. youwantwhat said: ferris wasn’t extraordinary, he was just a big fish in a small pond, destined to mediocrity and middle management once his grin stopped charming the masses. the Super Bowl ad was pretty damn accurate. now, david lightman… he was extraordinary.
